Planning & Policy Researcher
We are looking for a Planning & Policy Researcher with expertise in zoning regulations, small-scale development, and GIS. This role requires someone who is detail-oriented, independent, and comfortable managing projects with minimal supervision.
Location: Remote (Canada-based)
Position Type: Part-time or Full-time (Negotiable)
Key Responsibilities:
- Research and analyze zoning bylaws, building codes, and planning policies related to small-scale housing development across Canada.
- Interpret and summarize zoning regulations for integration into ReHousing’s platform.
- Use GIS tools to map land use, zoning, and parcel data for small-scale housing feasibility assessments.
- Support project management tasks, ensuring timely completion of research deliverables.
- Work independently to organize and synthesize findings into clear, actionable insights.
- Coordinate with various stakeholders.
- Potentially coordinate events or community engagement activities.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Strong understanding of zoning regulations and the ability to interpret municipal bylaws.
- Comfort looking up and analyzing zoning policies across different jurisdictions.
- Proficiency in GIS tools (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS) for spatial analysis.
- Ability to manage projects independently and meet deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear documentation and reporting.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with housing policy, development feasibility, or planning frameworks.
- Knowledge of small-scale development challenges and municipal planning processes.
- Familiarity with building online mapping platforms or data visualization tools.
Intermediate Designer & Researcher
We are seeking an Designer & Researcher with experience in small-scale housing, zoning regulations, and urban design. This role is ideal for a designer interested in housing innovation, urban policy, and the intersection of design and regulation.
Location: Remote (Canada-based)
Position Type: Part-time or Full-time (Negotiable)
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop small-scale housing typologies that align with zoning regulations and urban design principles.
- Research and synthesize municipal zoning bylaws, building codes, and policy frameworks to inform design strategies.
- Assist in the development of ReHousing’s design catalogue.
- Collaborate on feasibility and urban design research to support small-scale housing initiatives.
- Work independently to manage design research projects, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Experience designing small-scale housing (e.g., multiplexes, laneway suites, ADUs).
- Familiarity with zoning regulations and ability to translate them into design strategies.
- Strong urban design sensibility, with an interest in gentle density and housing affordability.
- Proficiency in architectural design software (e.g., Rhino).
- Strong graphic communication skills (e.g., Adobe Suite, GIS mapping is an asset).
- Ability to work independently and manage research projects.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with policy research or housing development feasibility.
- Knowledge of low-carbon building strategies and affordability considerations.
- Familiarity with citizen-led development models.
